Step by Step guide to painting acrylic flamenco dancers for beginners

Hello Everyone,

I started painting a month ago and found all the free material on youtube, pinterest and other tutorial blogs to be extremely helpful to someone like me who is still exploring painting hobby and test the waters.

Here is my small contribution back. I created this using a photo. The end result is no where near perfect, but I hope this helps getting started with acrylic paintings for beginners. This painting is done using basic colors.

Colors used:
1. Titanium White
2. Yellow Ochre
3. Cadmium Red Deep Hue
4. Ivory Black
5. Burnt Sienna

Canvas: 12" x 16"

Steps

Step1:
I prepared the canvas first by applying titanium white on the complete canvas. Then drew the outline for flamenco dancers.
Fill the dark shades first before starting the work on dancers.

Step 2:
Started adding the highlights for the lighter area, using yellow ochre, which is supposed to be lit.
In bottom started creating shadow using burnt sienna based the light source on the top (I am not quite skilled at this yet).

Step 3:
Now that I have first layer of dark colors and light source, started adding the color for the dress.
I am using Cad Red + Yellow Ochre.

Step 4:
Started working on the male dancer. Added color to his suit. Since both background and suit are black in color, blend a lighter shade with black while working on male dancers suit. Here I have lightened the suit with Grey color (using black and white).
I have further worked on the highlighting the light source with more layers of yellow ochre and burnt sienna.

I have added one more layer of red to female dancers dress. Added burnt sienna to female dancers hair. Started add smaller details like hair, color and shoe color.

Added skin tones using titanium white + burnt sienna.

Darkened the dark regions by add one more quote of black. This step is technically wrong as most if the skilled and trained painter would first work on dark colors and then start with light shades.
But I am not at this skill level yet.

Step 5:
Refine skin tones by applying multiple layers. Start refining facial details. Add more layers of red on female dancers dress.

Step 6:
Add all the fine details. Facial features, ruffles in the dress, outline of the body. Add more layers to shadow.

Add whites to highlight shoulder and hair to indicate the light source.

Keep adding more and more fine details to give it a better finish. At this point, I stopped working as everything I did sort started ruining the painting.

I will retry this painting after couple months to see the improvement.

All the best to all those who want to start painting as hobby. I followed CliveArt5 and Brandon Schaefer's painting. Both these skilled painters repeatedly said to not be afraid while painting.

This is probably not a great painting, but I would like to share what I learnt. Any feedback and help comments are welcome.

Disclaimer: I am just a beginner who has wanted to paint for over 20 years now. And I am now completely obsessed with painting. I am not an expert on anything.
